Old Rag Mountain

4Trees is eight miles from the Ridge Access Trail to Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park (SNP). If you are up for an adventure this hike is known for its challenging terrain. The hike spans approximately nine miles and offers a mix of strenuous rock scrambles and well-defined trails. As you ascend, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, dense forests, and rolling valleys. The summit, at 3,284 feet, provides a breathtaking 360-degree vista, making the effort worthwhile with a profound sense of accomplishment. We highly recommend starting early (really early) to avoid the crowds of hikers and reach the summit just before sunrise. This hike is so popular, you will need a a 'day-use' ticket from SNP.

White Oak Canyon

White Oak Canyon Trail in Syria, Virginia offers strenuous but rewarding hikes with amazing views and the option to cool off in the water at the end. Recent reviews note that the trail can be crowded, especially on weekends, and is well-marked and rocky. Some reviewers mention discrepancies in trail length, with one clocking it at around 12 miles. The trail typically presents increasing elevations, narrow paths, and enjoyable spots for swimming and photos, though it can be challenging for some. Conditions vary, with beautiful waterfalls and pleasant aromas in cooler months like August.

Nicholson Hollow

An alternate option for visitors with pets who still wish to hike from the Old Rag parking area. This hike takes you to Corbin Cabin, an old homesite built by a former resident, and features several stream crossings along the way.
